Why Your Chlorinator Hates “Cheap” Salt

In our line of work, we’ve seen it all. We’ve seen pool owners buy cheap, low-grade salt from a feed store or hardware chain, thinking “salt is just salt.” Unfortunately, this is the most common—and most expensive—mistake a pool owner can make.

Your saltwater chlorinator is the most valuable and delicate piece of equipment in your pool system. Its core is a set of expensive, coated metallic plates (the ‘cell’) that use electrolysis to create chlorine. This cell is extremely sensitive to impurities.

Cheap, low-grade salt is riddled with problems:

  • Heavy Metal Impurities: Small traces of iron, manganese, and copper found in unprocessed salt can and will permanently stain your pool’s surface (especially fibreglass and vinyl-liner pools). These stains are notoriously difficult and expensive to remove.

  • Phosphates: Low-grade salt often contains phosphates, which are the number one food source for algae. You could be adding salt and algae-food at the same time, forcing your chlorinator to work harder and requiring you to spend more on algaecides.

  • Insoluble Debris: Cheap salt is often dirty, containing tiny particles of grit, sand, and other matter. This debris doesn’t dissolve. It ends up as a gritty sludge on your pool floor or, worse, gets sucked into your filter, reducing its efficiency and lifespan.

  • Slow to Dissolve: Coarse, lumpy salt can sit on your pool floor for hours. This creates concentrated saline “hotspots” that can bleach or corrode your pool surface. It also means you have to spend your valuable time brushing and brushing to get it to dissolve.

Using the wrong salt is a false economy. You might save a few dollars on the bag, but you risk spending thousands on stain removal, algae treatments, or replacing a burnt-out chlorinator cell.

Our Solution: Premium-Grade, Fast-Dissolving Pool Salt

We’ve built our business on supplying only one kind of salt: ultra-pure, 100% Australian-sourced sodium chloride.

Our salt is specifically processed for modern saltwater pools. It’s clean, safe, and designed to maximise the life and efficiency of your chlorinator.

What Makes Our Salt Better?

  • Ultra-High Purity: Our salt is guaranteed to be over 99.8% pure NaCl. It is free from the phosphates, metals, and impurities that stain your pool and feed algae.

  • Fast-Dissolving & Easy to Use: Our salt is finely graded, like food-grade salt. It dissolves rapidly, often before it even hits the bottom of your pool. This means no brushing, no staining, and no waiting. Your pool gets the salt it needs, faster.

  • Protects Your Equipment: By using pure, clean salt, your chlorinator cell remains clean. It can produce chlorine at its most efficient rate, reducing electrical consumption and extending the cell’s lifespan significantly.

  • Feels Better on Your Skin: The high purity means the water feels softer and silkier. It’s gentler on your eyes, skin, and hair, making for a much more pleasant swimming experience for the whole family.

When you invest in a saltwater pool, you’re investing in a lifestyle of convenience. Don’t compromise that investment. Use the right fuel for your system.

Pool Care Tips for the Southern Downs Climate

Maintaining a pool in Warwick requires a slightly different approach than on the coast. Our hot, dry summers and high evaporation rates can impact your water chemistry.

  • Test Your Salt Level Monthly: During the swimming season, get into the habit of testing your salt level every 4-6 weeks. You can use simple electronic testers or test strips. This gives you a baseline and lets you know when a top-up is needed.

  • The Evaporation Myth: When water evaporates during a hot Warwick summer, the salt stays behind. This means your salt concentration will actually rise. This is why you should never add salt without testing first.

  • After a Heavy Storm: A big summer downpour is the most common reason for low salt. As rainwater (which is pure) overflows from your pool, it takes your expensive salty water with it. Always test your salt level a day or two after significant rainfall.

  • The “Sweet Spot”: Most chlorinators (like Chloromatic, Zodiac, Astral) are designed to run at an optimal level, often 3,500 PPM.

    • Too Low: If the salt is too low, the chlorinator can’t produce enough chlorine. Its “low salt” light will come on, and it may shut down to protect itself.

    • Too High: If the salt is too high (e.g., over 4,500 PPM), it can cause error codes, increase wear on the cell, and make the water taste unpleasantly “salty.”

  • Add Salt Slowly: When adding salt, always add it in stages. Add a bag or two, let it circulate for 12-24 hours, and then re-test. It’s much easier to add more salt than it is to remove it (which requires draining your pool).

Understanding Your Saltwater Pool

A saltwater pool is actually a chlorine pool. The magic is that you create your own chlorine right in the plumbing, using a process called electrolysis.

  1. The Fuel (Salt): You add our premium pool salt to your water to reach a specific concentration, usually between 3,000 and 4,000 parts per million (PPM).
  2. The Factory (Chlorinator Cell): As this mildly salty water passes through your chlorinator cell, a safe, low-voltage current separates the water (H₂O) and the salt (NaCl).
  3. The Product (Chlorine): This process creates Hypochlorous Acid (HClO), which is the active, sanitising form of chlorine. It’s the exact same “super-chlorine” that is created when you add granular chlorine or liquid chlorine.
  4. The “Magic” (It Recycles): After the chlorine has sanitised your pool (killing algae and bacteria), it reverts back into salt. The salt isn’t “used up” by this process. It’s constantly recycled.

So, why do you need to add more salt? The only way you lose salt is by removing the water itself. This happens from:

  • Backwashing your filter

  • Heavy rain that causes your pool to overflow

  • Splashing and “splash-out” from swimmers

  • A leak in your pool or plumbing

This is why you only need to “top up” your salt levels a few times a year.

Warwick Pool Salt: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: How much salt does my new pool need?

As a general rule, a new pool needs about 3-4kg of salt for every 1,000 litres of water. For a standard 50,000-litre pool, this means you’ll need 150-200kg of salt, or 8-10 bags (of 20kg bags) for the initial dose.

Q: I’m just topping up. How many bags do I need?

A typical 20kg bag of salt will raise the salt level in a 50,000-litre pool by about 400 PPM. If your pool is testing at 3,100 PPM and your ideal level is 3,500 PPM, one bag is all you need. If your “low salt” light is on (usually around 2,500 PPM), you will likely need 2-3 bags to bring it back to a healthy level.

Q: Do you deliver to Rosenthal Heights, or is it just in Warwick town?

Absolutely. We deliver to all of Warwick’s surrounding suburbs and localities. Rosenthal Heights, Sladevale, and Glennie Heights are our most popular delivery areas. We provide a full delivery service to your door.

Q: Is your pool salt safe for kids and pets?

Yes. In fact, it’s often better. The salt level in a saltwater pool is about 1/10th the salinity of the ocean. It’s a mild saline solution that is far gentler on the eyes, skin, and hair than a traditionally chlorinated pool, which can feel harsh and drying.

Q: Why is my “low salt” light on when I just added salt?

There are two common reasons. First, most chlorinators take 12-24 hours for their sensor to register the new salt level, as the water needs to fully circulate. Second, the salt sensor in your chlorinator cell might be dirty. It can get a calcium build-up (common with Warwick’s hard water) and give a false reading.

Q: Can I just use regular table salt or water softener salt? No, please don’t.

Table salt contains iodine and anti-caking agents that can cloud your water and stain your pool. Water softener salt often has glues or additives designed to make it dissolve slowly, which is the opposite of what your pool needs. Always use dedicated, high-purity pool salt.

Q: How often do you deliver to Sladevale?

We are in and around Sladevale and the greater Warwick area multiple times a week. We can almost always schedule your delivery within 1-2 business days, getting your pool back up and running fast.

Q: My water went cloudy after I added salt. What did I do wrong?

This is common if you add a large amount of salt at once. It’s usually just the salt temporarily “clouding” the water as it dissolves. It should clear within 24 hours. However, if you used a cheap brand, it could be insoluble debris or impurities. If it doesn’t clear, give your filter a clean or backwash.

Q: Do I still need to use “shock” or other chemicals?

Yes, but far less often. Your chlorinator produces a steady, stable amount of chlorine. However, after a very heavy bather load (like a pool party) or a long stretch of hot, stormy weather, it’s a good idea to “shock” the pool with a dose of granular chlorine to oxidise any contaminants and give your chlorinator a head start.

Q: Can I pick up the salt from you directly?

We are first and foremost a delivery service, as our goal is to save you the heavy lifting. Please call us directly to discuss your needs, and we can advise on the best and fastest way to get your salt.
